From Survivor to Advocate
From December 2023 to May 2024, Henry served as a Peer Leader for the KNOW ABUSE program at the Jewish Family Service Association (JFSA) of Cleveland. In this role, Henry educated students in grades 6-12 about healthy relationships, abusive behaviors, communication, consent, and anger management. His efforts aimed to equip young individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize and prevent abusive behaviors in their relationships. He facilitated over 10 peer-led discussions on crucial topics such as teen dating violence, consent, and supporting friends, creating a safe space for students to share their thoughts and experiences.
One of the highlights of Henry's role was advocating for survivors by speaking to legislators at the Ohio Domestic Violence Network’s (ODVN) Advocacy Day in March 2024. This experience allowed him to directly contribute to the fight against domestic violence by sharing the importance of their work with policymakers and advocating for stronger protections and resources for survivors.
Additionally, Henry attended the Ohio Attorney General’s Two Days in May Conference on Victim Assistance in May 2024. This event brought together hundreds of advocates and survivors, and Henry was deeply moved by the powerful stories and insights shared. The conference featured sessions on transforming survivorship into leadership and building resilience with child and adolescent survivors, reinforcing his commitment to advocacy and victim assistance.
This role was profoundly personal for Henry, as domestic violence services have supported him in his own life. It was a full-circle moment that reinforced his dedication to this vital cause. Henry is immensely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the KNOW ABUSE program and educate young individuals about teen dating violence prevention. This experience will forever hold a special place in his heart as he continues his journey in advocacy.
